about
Stained Cotton is a folk and surrealism-inspired exploration of the double standards of and sexism towards women in British society. Written last year during the heightened coverage of misogyny and violence towards women in the media, the song describes the unjust, oppressive and vulnerable position many women are forced into.
lyrics
You wouldn’t be at all surprised to know
They stole her vows before asking her to go
Would it be so strange for her to use
This fickle power she’s learned to abuse
To a place where the ice breathes
And death’s but between sheets
You’ve left what you once had
But the door locks in the Keep
And they say she was always mad
The girl with the bloodied hands
That they sooth with melted meat
As such holy text demands
Perform it all I see
The day slowly dawning
With cut tongues and broken teeth
The light slowly forming
Maintain treasured as you please
The night slowly calling
Bent backs and heavy knees
Your gaze carefully crawling
A new rouge to start the show
A fresh you raring to go
A speck of blood upon the lip
Hidden amongst such spender is
‘Perform it all’ I see...
It’s three in the morning
Cut around day dreams
All but stained cotton
Walk to the village sore
Past cattle and laboured hordes
Cut around day dreams
With losses long forgotten
Perform it all I see
The day slowly dawning
With cut tongues and broken teeth
The light slowly forming
Maintain treasured as you please
The night slowly calling
Bent backs and heavy knees
Your gaze carefully crawling
A new rouge to start the show
A fresh you raring to go
A speck of blood upon the lip
Hidden amongst such spender is
You wouldn’t be at all surprised to know
They stole her vows before asking her to go
Would it be so strange for her to use
This fickle power she’s learned to abuse
